Rescripting Trauma Memories with Memory Reconsolidation: Protocols for Updating Implicit Beliefs and Patterns

Live Webinar: Jun. 21, 2024 from 12 pm - 3 pm EDT/ 9 am - 12 pm PDT

Reprocessing traumatic memories can be a tough task, due to the stubborn persistence of painful emotions, thoughts, and patterns woven into the memory at both conscious and subconscious levels. Fortunately, neuroscience has revealed how psychotherapists can more effectively help their clients reprocess traumatic memories by harnessing the mechanisms of memory reconsolidation.

Memory reconsolidation refers to the brain's inherent ability to update a memory network with new information when the person encounters a new experience that is emotionally significant enough for the brain to change the memory’s meaning, context, and associations.

In this webinar, we will explore the phenomenon of memory reconsolidation and how psychotherapists can utilize it to create experiences that help their clients rescript trauma narratives, repair attachment wounds, and foster a positive post-trauma identity.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop, participants will be better able to...

+ Evaluate recent neuroscience discoveries regarding memory reconsolidation and their clinical implications for treating trauma.

+ Describe the steps of the RECON protocol, an imaginal rescripting technique to help clients reduce distress related to memories of traumatic events.

+ Describe how to integrate cognitive reframing techniques with an experiential intervention such as imagery, music, movement, and role-play to rescript the client’s trauma narrative.

+ Identify at least two ways to help clients avoid re-traumatization while reviewing traumatic memories.

+ Discuss at least two strengths and two limitations of the research on memory reconsolidation and clinical hypnosis in trauma treatment.

Transforming Trauma with Hypnosis: Unlocking Inner Resources for Healing, Resilience, and Self-Compassion

Live in-person or online: Oct. 4, 2024 from 2 pm - 4 pm EDT/ 11 am - 1 pm PDT
Innovations in Psychotherapy Conference, Anaheim, CA

Hypnosis is making a comeback as research demonstrates its effectiveness in relieving anxiety, resolving traumatic memories, and reducing pain. Find out why hypnosis is a powerful tool for rewiring stubborn, negative beliefs that don’t respond to traditional therapeutic interventions. Learn the art of triggering subconscious change using metaphor, multisensory language, and imaginative techniques to rescript trauma narratives, repair attachment wounds, and foster self-compassion and resilience. You may even experience your own transformative trance with live demonstrations and experiential activities as you discover how to:

+ Safely guide your clients into hypnotic states, effectively frame suggestions, and activate innate healing responses.

+ Provide self-hypnosis techniques clients can use to evoke self-compassion, motivate themselves, and stop self-defeating behaviors.

+ Resolve traumatic memories using a simple five-step protocol that accesses the client’s inner wisdom and strength, leaving them feeling empowered, resilient, and uplifted.

+ Instill states of hope, peace, joy, and vitality in your clients.

Rescripting Trauma Memories with Memory Reconsolidation

Live: Nov. 21, 2024 from 1:15 pm - 2:45 pm EST
East Tennessee Mental Health Association Psychiatric Symposium  Knoxville, TN

Reprocessing traumatic memories can be a tough task, due to the stubborn persistence of painful emotions, thoughts, and patterns woven into the memory. Fortunately, the neuroscience discovery of memory reconsolidation has revealed the brain’s own mechanisms for updating a memory network and reversing negative beliefs and responses linked to the memory.

In this workshop, Courtney Armstrong will discuss three key steps for eliciting memory reconsolidation. Then, she’ll share three strategies you can use to harness the mechanisms of memory reconsolidation to help clients more easily reduce distress, change internal beliefs, and transform trauma narratives into personal acts of triumph.

After attending this presentation, clinicians will be better able to:

+ Evaluate recent neuroscience discoveries regarding memory reconsolidation and their clinical implications for treating trauma

+ Describe three key steps for eliciting memory reconsolidation.

+ Discuss at least two strengths and two limitations of the research on memory reconsolidation in trauma treatment.
